About Bunk'Art 1

A huge five-storey nuclear bunker built in secret in the 1970s for Enver Hoxha and the communist leadership, now a museum of Albanian history and of a country that covered itself in bunkers.

Bunk'Art 1 is a vast anti-nuclear bunker built in secret between 1972 and 1978 at the foot of Mount Dajti, on the edge of Tirana, to shelter the dictator Enver Hoxha and the communist leadership in case of war. It has five floors and more than a hundred rooms, including Hoxha's own suite and an assembly hall. It opened as a museum and art space in 2014.

Its exhibitions tell Albania's history from 1939 to 1990, including the bunker-building programme under which the regime covered the country in concrete bunkers, estimated at between about 173,000 and more than 750,000. None was ever used in the war they were built for.
