About The Riva (Obala hrvatskog narodnog preporoda)

Split's palm-lined seafront promenade runs right along the Roman wall of Diocletian's Palace, the whole city's open-air living room, where everyone strolls, gathers, and watches the sun drop behind Marjan.

The Riva, officially Obala hrvatskog narodnog preporoda, the Croatian National Revival Waterfront, is Split's palm-lined seafront promenade, and 'Riva' is the name everyone actually uses. It runs east to west directly along the southern, sea-facing wall of Diocletian's Palace, so the Roman façade forms the backdrop to its cafés. It serves as the city's open-air living room: the stage for the evening passeggiata, for festivals, processions and public celebrations.

The promenade took its modern form in the early nineteenth century, under the Napoleonic French administration associated with Marshal Auguste de Marmont. Its present appearance comes from a redesign by the Croatian studio 3LHD, which won a public competition in 2005; the rebuilt Riva, a modular grid of white stone roughly 250 metres long, opened on 7 May 2007. The cool modernist look proved divisive among residents. From the Riva rise views of the Cathedral of St Domnius bell tower and, westward, Marjan hill.

Did you know? The cafés along the Riva back directly onto history: the promenade runs the full southern, sea-facing length of Diocletian's Palace, so the ancient Roman wall stands behind every coffee.
