About Matejuška

Just west of the Riva, Split's old fishermen's cove is still a working boat harbour, and the city's favourite place to sit on the breakwater and watch the sunset.

Matejuška is the old fishermen's harbour of Split, a small cove on the seafront just west of the Riva, on Trumbićeva obala, at the foot of the historic Veli Varoš quarter. For centuries it has sheltered the small wooden boats of local fishermen, who came down from Veli Varoš and Marjan to fish, notably for sardines, and it remains a working boat cove today rather than a polished tourist site.

Beyond fishing, the shore once held a small boat yard and stood beside a communal washing area known as the Piškera. The cove features in Split folklore, including the local love story of the fisherman Roko and Cicibela. Reconstructed in the twenty-first century while deliberately keeping its traditional fishing-port character, Matejuška is one of the city's most beloved gathering spots, above all at sunset, when people settle on the stone breakwater with a drink to watch the day end.

Did you know? Matejuška is no museum piece: it is still a working fishermen's cove, where real wooden boats belonging to locals share the water with everyone who comes down for the sunset.
