About Ivan Meštrović Gallery
The sculptor Ivan Meštrović designed this seaside villa as his own home and studio; today it displays his marble and bronze figures where he meant them to stand.
The Ivan Meštrović Gallery is an art museum on the southern slope of Marjan, housed in the villa that the sculptor Ivan Meštrović (1883–1962) designed and built for himself as a residence, studio and exhibition space, chiefly across the 1930s (about 1931–1939). Croatia's most celebrated modern sculptor, Meštrović is represented here in marble, bronze, wood, stone and plaster, across religious, portrait and figural subjects. During the 1940s he left wartime Yugoslavia and, in 1947, emigrated to the United States, teaching at Syracuse University and later the University of Notre Dame before his death in 1962. In 1952 he gave the villa, the nearby Kaštelet and a large body of work to the Croatian people, and the gallery opened that year. The Kaštelet (Crikvine-Kaštilac), a sixteenth-century complex he adapted, holds his monumental cycle of carved wooden reliefs on the Life of Christ.
