About Marjan (Marjan Forest Park)

The pine-clad hill west of the old town is Split's green lung, a place of clifftop chapels, sea-view terraces and swimming coves that the whole city breathes with.

Marjan is the pine-wooded hill and peninsula immediately west of Split's old town, protected as a forest park (park-šuma) and widely regarded as the city's main green recreation area, or 'lungs'. Its highest point, the Telegrin peak, stands at roughly 178 metres, named for a nineteenth-century optical-telegraph station once sited there. Although it appears ancient, the Aleppo-pine cover is largely the result of deliberate afforestation driven from the early 1900s and associated with the Marjan society, founded in 1903. Stone stairs climb from the Varoš quarter to the Vidilica viewpoint and café terrace, overlooking the old town, harbour and the Diocletian's Palace roofline. The slopes hold small medieval hermitage chapels, including Saint Nicholas and, near the western end, the cave-church of Saint Jerome and Our Lady of Bethlehem. Today Marjan serves mainly for hiking, jogging, cycling and swimming at rocky coves such as Bene and Kašjuni.

Did you know? The forest that gives Marjan its nickname of Split's 'lungs' is not natural at all, the Aleppo pines were deliberately planted from the early twentieth century, spurred by the Marjan society founded in 1903.
