About Silver Gate (Srebrna vrata / Porta Argentea)

The palace's plain eastern gate, walled shut for centuries behind a Baroque church, until wartime bombing destroyed the church and freed the Roman doorway onto Split's bustling green market.

The Silver Gate (Latin Porta Argentea, also Porta orientalis) is the eastern gate of Diocletian's Palace, set on the main east-west street, the decumanus, opposite the Iron Gate. It is plainer and simpler than the richly decorated Golden Gate, though it once shared the same double-gate defensive scheme, with flanking towers, now lost, and arcaded niches. Today it opens onto the open-air green market, or Pazar, Split's main fruit and vegetable market immediately east of the palace walls.

For centuries the gate was walled up and hidden behind later buildings, including the Baroque church of Our Lady of Dušica (Gospa od Dušice) raised against this stretch of wall. It was reopened and restored in the twentieth century after the Second World War: Allied bombing of Split in 1943-44 destroyed the Dušica church and adjoining structures, and the post-war rubble clearance and restoration of the 1950s re-exposed and reconstructed the gate. It leads along the decumanus to the Peristyle and forms part of the UNESCO World Heritage complex inscribed in 1979.

Did you know? The gate owes its reopening to a bombing: Allied air raids in 1943-44 destroyed the Baroque church of Our Lady of Dušica that had sealed it, and post-war clearance finally exposed the Roman doorway underneath.
