About Golden Gate (Zlatna vrata / Porta Aurea)

The palace's grandest gate, built for an emperor to ride home through, facing inland toward Salona near his birthplace, and hiding a thousand-year-old church tucked into the wall above.

The Golden Gate (Latin Porta Aurea, also Porta septentrionalis) is the northern and most monumental of the palace's four gates. It faced inland along the road toward Salona, the Roman capital of Dalmatia and traditionally near the birthplace of Diocletian, who was born in the province around 244 AD. By tradition the emperor entered here on 1 June 305 AD, the day after abdicating. It is the richest of the gates: a double-gate system with an inner courtyard, its outer facade articulated with blind arcading and niches that once held statues, probably of the four Tetrarchs.

The small pre-Romanesque Church of St Martin is inserted into the guard corridor in the wall above the gate; this narrow chapel, roughly ninth to eleventh century, survives with its carved stone altar screen. From the gate the main north-south street, the cardo, runs straight to the Peristyle at the palace's heart. The gate is part of the UNESCO World Heritage complex of 1979, and the bronze Grgur Ninski statue stands just outside it.

Did you know? Tucked into the guard's corridor directly above the gate is one of the smallest churches you will ever see, the pre-Romanesque chapel of Saint Martin, a thousand-year-old sliver of a church built inside a Roman wall.
