About Vestibule (Vestibul)
A round Roman hall where visitors once waited to meet the emperor, its dome long fallen open to the sky, step in and sing, and the stone answers.
The Vestibule is the circular, domed entrance hall of Diocletian's Palace, the ceremonial threshold between the public Peristyle to the north and the emperor's private apartments to the south. Part of the palace's residential south wing, it was completed by about 305 AD, when Diocletian retired to Spalatum. Square on the outside but circular within, it is articulated by four large semicircular niches rising to a domed cupola that was once faced with mosaic, its walls clad in coloured marble and its niches probably holding statues.
Almost all of that decoration is now lost, leaving bare brick and stone. The dome stands open to the sky through a wide round hole at its apex, which resulted largely from the loss of the cupola's upper courses rather than a deliberate opening. Celebrated for its acoustics, the hall regularly hosts klapa singers. It forms part of the UNESCO World Heritage complex inscribed in 1979.
Did you know? The great round hole in the ceiling is not a designed oculus like the Pantheon's, it is simply where the top of the dome collapsed and was never rebuilt.
