About Cathedral of Saint Domnius

The emperor Diocletian built this as his own tomb; within centuries it became a cathedral honouring one of the Christians he had martyred, history's most pointed reversal.

The Cathedral of Saint Domnius occupies Diocletian's octagonal Roman mausoleum, built around 305 AD, ringed by a colonnade and crowned by a dome. Converted into a Christian cathedral, traditionally in the seventh century by refugees from nearby Salona, it is dedicated to Saint Domnius, the bishop of Salona martyred around 304 during Diocletian's persecution of Christians. In a striking reversal, the tomb raised for the persecuting emperor became a church honouring one of his victims; Diocletian's body and porphyry sarcophagus were removed and no trace of them remains.

The Romanesque wooden entrance doors, carved by Andrija Buvina in 1214, present twenty-eight panels from the life of Christ. Inside, the Roman circular plan and dome survive, alongside a thirteenth-century Romanesque pulpit, medieval choir stalls, and later Baroque altars holding the relics of Saint Domnius and Saint Anastasius. Often called one of the oldest cathedrals in the world, it earns the title through the age of its Roman fabric rather than continuous use as a cathedral.

Did you know? The cathedral began as Diocletian's mausoleum, yet the emperor's own remains are long gone, his body was removed and his porphyry sarcophagus destroyed, leaving no trace inside his own tomb.
