About Diocletian's Palace
An entire old town lives inside this one: a Roman emperor's seafront retirement palace, so complete that Split's residents still hang laundry from windows cut in third-century walls.
Diocletian's Palace is a fortified imperial residence built around 295 to 305 AD for the Roman emperor Diocletian, who was born nearby at Salona and retired here after abdicating in 305. Constructed largely of white limestone from the island of Brač, together with marble, Egyptian granite columns and imported sphinxes, it is among the best-preserved Roman palace complexes anywhere. The roughly rectangular compound of about three hectares fuses a seafront luxury villa in its southern half with a military-camp layout in the north, and is pierced by four gates: the Golden, Silver, Iron and Bronze.
After Avar and Slavic raids destroyed Salona in the seventh century, refugees sheltered within the abandoned walls, and the medieval town of Split grew inside the palace, reusing Roman structures as homes and churches. It remains a living quarter where some 3,000 residents live among the Roman fabric. UNESCO inscribed the complex in 1979.
Did you know? Diocletian retired to grow old here after abdicating in 305 AD, genuinely walking away from absolute power, something so rare that he is often, if loosely, called the only Roman emperor ever to do it.
