About People's Square (Narodni trg / Pjaca)
The locals call it Pjaca, not Narodni trg, a worn scrap of Venetian Italian for the square where Split has come to talk, trade, and be seen for centuries.
People's Square, officially Narodni trg and known to locals as Pjaca, from the Venetian-Italian piazza, is the main square of medieval Split, which grew up just west of Diocletian's Palace, outside its western Iron Gate, as the town expanded beyond the Roman walls. Though tourist accounts often date it to the thirteenth century, it rose to prominence gradually across the thirteenth to fifteenth centuries, becoming the city's civic and commercial heart in the late Middle Ages.
The square is ringed by Venetian, Gothic and Renaissance palaces, including the Karepić (Cambi) and Pavlović palaces. Its most notable building is the fifteenth-century old Town Hall, a Venetian Gothic structure with an open ground-floor loggia of pointed arches, the sole survivor of Split's medieval municipal complex. Restored around 1900, it served as the city hall and later the Ethnographic Museum, and now hosts exhibitions and events. A 24-hour town clock overlooks the square near the palace.
Did you know? Split locals almost never say the square's official name, Narodni trg. They call it Pjaca, pronounced pyah-tsa, a word worn down from the Italian piazza, left behind by centuries of Venetian rule.
