About Fruit Square (Voćni trg / Trg braće Radić)
Everyone calls it Fruit Square for the market that once filled it, but the real draw is Meštrović's bronze Marko Marulić, father of Croatian literature, mid-sentence outside a Baroque palace.
Fruit Square, officially Trg braće Radić, after the Croatian politicians Stjepan and Antun Radić, but universally known as Voćni trg for the fruit market once held here, sits in the medieval old town just west of Diocletian's Palace. It is dominated by the Venetian Tower (Mletačka kula), the sole surviving remnant of a fifteenth-century Venetian castello built to defend the city.
Facing the square is the Baroque Milesi Palace, a seventeenth-century building regarded as one of the finest of its kind in Dalmatia. In front of it stands Ivan Meštrović's bronze statue of Marko Marulić (1450–1524), the Split-born humanist known as the father of Croatian literature; Meštrović modelled it in 1924 and it was unveiled in 1925, on the 400th anniversary of Marulić's death. Marulić's epic Judita, composed in 1501 and first printed in Venice in 1521, was the first artistic epic in the Croatian language.
Did you know? Nobody sells fruit on Fruit Square anymore. The old town square earned the nickname Voćni trg as the site of Split's fruit market, and the name outlived the market by generations.
