About Green Market (Pazar)

Just outside the palace's Silver Gate, Split's open-air Pazar sells Dalmatian fruit, figs, cheese and flowers each morning, everyday shopping staged against a two-thousand-year-old Roman wall.

The Pazar is Split's main open-air produce market, running along the eastern wall of Diocletian's Palace just outside the Silver Gate (Srebrna vrata), a short walk from the cathedral. Known locally simply as Pazar or Stari pazar, it operates daily, mostly in the morning, as the city's traditional food-shopping hub. Stalls sell seasonal Dalmatian fruit and vegetables alongside flowers, dried figs, olives, honey, cheese and herbs, while adjacent covered halls house meat and dairy sections. It should not be confused with the covered Fish Market (Peškarija) west of the centre or the small historic Fruit Square (Voćni trg) inside the old town, three distinct places often mixed up. Set hard against the palace's Roman east wall, with the Baroque church of Saint Dominic alongside, the Pazar is valued as a living, non-touristic slice of local life and a fine stop for picnic supplies.

Did you know? Split confusingly has three separate markets: this open-air Pazar by the Silver Gate, the covered Fish Market west of the centre, and the small old-town Fruit Square, locals mix them up too.
