About Prokurative (Trg Republike / Republic Square)
It looks like a slice of Venice dropped onto the Adriatic, but the Prokurative is a nineteenth-century neo-Renaissance square, built after Venetian rule, and now one of Split's favourite open-air concert stages.
The Prokurative, officially Trg Republike, Republic Square, is a monumental square just west of Diocletian's Palace, one block back from the Riva. Framed on three sides by arcaded red buildings and open on the fourth directly to the sea, it is the only large square in Split with such a sea-facing side. Its neo-Renaissance design and its name are consciously modelled on the Procuratie of St Mark's Square in Venice.
Despite that Venetian look, it is not a Venetian-era square: it was built in the nineteenth century, under Austrian rule of Dalmatia. The project was initiated by mayor Antonio Bajamonti; the first element, the Teatro Bajamonti on the north side, was begun around 1859 and later burned down. The square rose in stages, the west wing about 1867, the east wing only in 1928, and was never fully realised as envisioned. Today it is a leading venue for concerts, most famously the Split Festival.
Did you know? For all its Venetian looks, the Prokurative is not Venetian at all. It was built in the nineteenth century, under Austrian rule, long after Venice lost control of the Dalmatian coast.
