About Fish Market (Peškarija)
Split's covered fish market, the Peškarija, opened in 1890 in an elegant iron-and-stone hall, and locals still swear no fly ever dares to land on its marble slabs.
Split's fish market, known as the Peškarija (or Ribarnica), sits just west of the old-town core near Marmontova street, selling fresh Adriatic fish and seafood, mostly in the mornings. Its hall opened on 31 March 1890 as the first public building erected by Split's new Croatian municipal administration, an end-of-nineteenth-century Art Nouveau/Secession structure of stone and iron with an open, ventilated interior. It remains a working market rather than a museum: rows of marble slabs display the daily catch beneath high skylights. The Peškarija is famously said to be a fish market 'without flies', which locals attribute to sulphurous vapours from the neighbouring sulphur spa (Sumporne toplice) built right beside it; the adjacency and the reputation are real, but the sulphur explanation is folk tradition rather than established fact. It stands among central Split's few surviving purpose-built late-nineteenth-century public buildings.
Did you know? When the Peškarija opened on 31 March 1890, it was the very first public building put up by Split's newly Croatian municipal administration, a fish market as a statement of civic pride.
