About Town Walls (Stadtmauer)
A largely complete medieval wall circuit rings the old town, with a covered walkway linking towers and gates. War-damaged stretches were rebuilt after 1945, so it is not wholly original.
Rothenburg ob der Tauber keeps a largely complete medieval defensive circuit around its old town. English-language sources describe it as one of only four German towns whose city walls survive essentially intact, together with Nördlingen, Dinkelsbühl and Berching. The fortifications grew in stages from the 1172 town charter onward, and reach a reported circumference of about 3,360 metres, an approximate figure. A covered wall-walk, the Wehrgang, runs along much of the ring and connects towers and gate-towers including the Siebersturm, Kobolzeller Tor, Klingentor, Burgtor and Rödertor.
The circuit is not wholly original. An air raid on 31 March 1945 damaged a long stretch of wall and several towers, and destroyed a large part of the eastern old town, variously reported as around 40 percent. Because most outer walls survived, they served as the base for rebuilding. Damaged sections were repaired with donations from around the world, and rebuilt stretches carry commemorative stones inscribed with donor names.
