About Marktplatz and Town Hall (Rathaus)

The old town's market square, framed by the Gothic-and-Renaissance Rathaus and its tall tower. A mechanical clock nearby reenacts the Meistertrunk, a local legend rather than documented history.

The Marktplatz is the civic heart of Rothenburg's old town, framed by the town hall, the Ratstrinkstube and gabled burgher houses. The Rathaus combines a Gothic rear wing, dated by English-language sources to around 1250, with a Renaissance front block facing the square. That front was built after a 1501 fire, roughly between 1572 and 1578, and is credited to the town architect Leonhard Weidmann; a baroque arcade was added in 1681. Its tower rises to almost 61 metres and can be climbed for a wide view.

On the Ratstrinkstube is a mechanical clock whose windows open on the hour to show figures of the general Tilly and a former mayor, Nusch, reenacting the Meistertrunk. According to the legend, in 1631 Nusch saved the town by draining a huge tankard of wine in one draught. Historians regard the tale as essentially apocryphal, first recorded long after the Thirty Years' War.

Did you know? The Rathaus tower, given by sources as almost 61 metres, rewards roughly 220 steps with a panorama over nearly the whole old town. The stair is narrow, so climbers take turns with those descending.
