About Herrngasse

The town's broad main street, running west from the Marktplatz to the Burgtor. Former patrician houses line it, along with a fountain and the old Franciscan church.

The Herrngasse is Rothenburg's broad main street, running west from the Marktplatz down to the Burgtor and the Burggarten, the castle garden above the Tauber. Its eastern end opens directly onto the market square beside the Rathaus, making it the main axis across the old town. The street is unusually wide for a medieval town, which historically allowed room for markets and processions.

It is lined with large former patrician houses, reflecting its status as the address of the town's leading families, together with historic inns such as the Hotel Eisenhut. The Herrnbrunnen fountain, also called the Georgsbrunnen, stands along the street, and the Franziskanerkirche, among the town's oldest churches, faces it. Because much of the old town was damaged in 1945 and rebuilt, some frontages include post-war reconstruction. The street is freely walkable, its whole length open to anyone.

Did you know? The Herrngasse takes its name from the Herren, the town's gentry, whose large houses lined it. Unusually wide for a medieval street, it left room for markets and processions in earlier centuries.
