About German Christmas Museum & Käthe Wohlfahrt

The year-round flagship of Käthe Wohlfahrt on Herrngasse, where an all-season Christmas store surrounds a giant decorated tree and houses the German Christmas Museum, open all year.

Käthe Wohlfahrt is a German company devoted to Christmas decoration, and its Rothenburg flagship at Herrngasse 1 keeps a year-round Christmas village trading whatever the season. Founded in 1964 in Herrenberg near Stuttgart by Wilhelm Wohlfahrt (1928-2001) and Käthe Wohlfahrt (1933-2018), the business grew from Wilhelm selling music boxes after a well-received sale to an American military family in 1963, and moved to Rothenburg in 1977. A large decorated tree stands at the centre of the store, surrounded by candles, glass baubles, nutcrackers, nativity scenes, incense smokers, and Schwibbögen candle arches.

Within the same building, the Deutsches Weihnachtsmuseum (German Christmas Museum) opened on 29 September 2000 and remains open year-round. It presents the history of German Christmas and of Christmas-tree decoration through historic ornaments, trees, Weihnachtsmann figures, and candle arches. Claims about the world's largest selection or specific article counts are the company's own marketing statements.

Did you know? The Christmas empire began with music boxes. Wilhelm Wohlfahrt's sale to an American military family in 1963 went so well that he and Käthe founded the decoration company the following year, in 1964.
