About Tauber Valley, Double Bridge & Detwang

The green Tauber valley below town, with the two-tier Doppelbrücke and the village of Detwang, whose Romanesque church holds a Holy Cross Altar attributed to Riemenschneider and his workshop.

Below the walled town, the river Tauber runs through a green valley reached by steep paths. The Doppelbrücke, a double bridge with two tiers of arches, crosses the Tauber closer to the town than Detwang and was probably built around 1330, though that date is likely rather than documented. It lay on a trade route between Augsburg and Würzburg. Four upper arches collapsed in 1790 and the bridge was renovated in 1791; German troops blew it up in 1945, and it was rebuilt from 1955 and reopened on 10 November 1956.

Downstream lies Detwang, now a district of Rothenburg but far older than the walled town. Its church of St Peter and Paul was founded between 961 and 984 and served as Rothenburg's parish church until 1258. The small, single-nave Romanesque church holds a carved Holy Cross Altar dated 1505 to 1508 and attributed to Tilman Riemenschneider, with his workshop's involvement debated by scholars.

Did you know? The Doppelbrücke stacks two rows of arches, one above the other. Probably built around 1330, it was blown up by German troops in 1945 and reopened, rebuilt, on 10 November 1956.
