About Röder Gate (Rödertor) and Tower

The town's main eastern gate and tower. The Röderturm is the only wall tower open to climb, and its rebuilt form follows the original that burned out in 1945.

The Rödertor is the main eastern gate of Rothenburg's town wall and the traditional entrance from the east. Its tower, the Röderturm, has origins in the fourteenth century, around 1390, and is the only tower on the wall circuit open to the public to climb, about 103 steps up to the tower chamber. Its intermediate floors hold an exhibition on the growth of the town and its fortifications, and the gate complex includes the sixteenth-century Röderbastei bastion and a small tollhouse.

The gate stands at the eastern edge of the part of the old town most heavily damaged in the air raid of 31 March 1945. The Röderturm burned out to its walls at the end of the war and was reconstructed soon afterward, aided by the Alt-Rothenburg association. Its name is officially traced to a curia rode, an estate that once stood nearby, an explanation usually attributed rather than treated as certain.

Did you know? Of all the towers on Rothenburg's wall circuit, only the Röderturm is open to the public. About 103 steps lead up to the tower chamber, and the floors below hold a small exhibition.
