About St. James's Church (Jakobskirche)
The town's Gothic Lutheran parish church, built between 1311 and 1484. On its west gallery stands Tilman Riemenschneider's Holy Blood Altar, named for a relic said to hold Christ's blood.
St. James's Church (St. Jakob) is a Gothic hall church just north of the Marktplatz and the main Lutheran parish church of Rothenburg, originally Catholic before the Reformation. Its dedication to St James the Greater reflects its place on the medieval pilgrimage routes to Santiago de Compostela. It was built in stages between 1311 and 1484, with the chancel completed in 1322 and the nave raised from 1373, and was consecrated in 1485 by the Bishop of Würzburg. Two towers rise above the roof.
The church's best-known work is the Holy Blood Altar, carved by Tilman Riemenschneider around 1500 to 1505 and set on the west gallery rather than in the chancel. Its shrine depicts the Last Supper with Judas at the centre. A rock-crystal cross of about 1270 in the cresting holds a capsule traditionally said to contain a drop of Christ's blood, a relic claim that gives the altar its name.
Did you know? Riemenschneider's Holy Blood Altar breaks with convention by placing Judas, not Christ, at the centre of the Last Supper scene, putting the moment of betrayal squarely in the middle of the carved shrine.
