About Plönlein

One of Rothenburg's most photographed corners, where the lane forks around a small half-timbered house between two gate-towers, the Siebersturm above and the Kobolzeller Tor below. A free viewpoint.

The Plönlein is a forked street scene in the south of Rothenburg's old town and one of its most reproduced views. At the fork stands a small yellow half-timbered house with a fountain, framed by two gate-towers of the medieval fortifications. The higher, left-hand lane rises toward the Siebersturm, the inner gate-tower, while the lower, right-hand lane descends the Kobolzeller Steige to the Kobolzeller Tor, the outer gate toward the Tauber valley.

The site lies where the Untere Schmiedgasse meets the Kobolzeller Steige and the Spitalgasse, below the level of the central Marktplatz. Painters and photographers have framed this composition since the nineteenth century. The name is commonly traced to the Latin planum, meaning a level place, an explanation usually repeated as tradition. It is an open public street with no admission, and can be very crowded at peak times.

Did you know? The name Plönlein is commonly traced to the Latin planum, a level or flat place, though the derivation is usually repeated as the accepted explanation rather than firmly proven. Older captions also spell it Plömlein.
