About Castle Garden (Burggarten)

A public garden of lawns and hedges on the western spur where an imperial castle once stood, reached through the Burgtor, with wide views down the Tauber valley toward Detwang.

The Burggarten occupies the westernmost spur of Rothenburg's old town, on the site of a former imperial castle and reached through the Burgtor gate. King Konrad III is recorded as building a palace-like imperial residence here around 1142, and a weir system in the area is noted as early as 950. Tradition attributes the castle's ruin to an earthquake in 1356, linked to the Basel earthquake, though scholars debate how much the quake destroyed. Emperor Charles IV allowed citizens to reuse the ruined stones for municipal buildings.

The St.-Blasius-Kapelle, the last surviving remnant of the Hohenstaufen castle, was formed from the inner castle's Romanesque palas and converted into a chapel between 1397 and 1400 under Mayor Heinrich Toppler. Today the garden is a public park of lawns, hedges and sculptures, holding a Stauferstele installed in 2010 and offering panoramic views over the Tauber valley toward Detwang.
