About Topplerschlösschen (Toppler tower-house)

A small fortified tower-house in the Tauber valley, built in 1388 for mayor Heinrich Toppler, with a stone base carrying half-timbered upper storeys, once ringed by a spring-fed pond.

The Topplerschlösschen is a small late-medieval fortified tower-house in the Tauber valley below Rothenburg, on Taubertalweg north-west of the walled town. It was built in 1388 for Heinrich Toppler, a wealthy and powerful mayor, with construction generally dated to 1388 to 1390. Of a rare surviving type, it sets two projecting half-timbered upper storeys and a steep gabled roof on a two-storey stone base about 5.4 metres across. Its purchase contract records both a representative purpose and the protection of the valley's mills.

It was originally ringed by an artificial pond about 55 metres across, fed by a spring. After Toppler's arrest and death in 1408 the property reverted to the town. Since 1861 it has belonged to the Boas family, who let it as holiday accommodation into the 1960s. The tower survives largely intact, furnished with period pieces from the 16th to 19th centuries, and can be visited.

Did you know? The tower is a rare survivor: a two-storey stone base only about 5.4 metres across, carrying two projecting half-timbered upper storeys beneath a steep gabled roof, built for mayor Toppler in 1388.
