About Medieval Crime Museum

A museum of legal history, not the torture show its nickname suggests, filling a medieval commandery on Burggasse with punishment instruments, shame masks, seals, and centuries of European justice.

The Mittelalterliches Kriminalmuseum on Burggasse is a museum of legal history rather than the torture attraction its popular nickname implies. Established in 1920, it has occupied the former commandery of the Knights of St John since 1977, a building raised roughly between 1393 and 1410 and remodelled in the Baroque style in 1718. Its permanent exhibition spreads over four levels and traces more than a thousand years of European law and justice, from legal procedure and evidence to corporal and capital punishment, the inquisition, shaming penalties, and constitutional and police law.

Alongside instruments of punishment, the collection holds shame masks, pillories, historical court and town seals, and legal documents, illustrating a system that ran as much on ritual and reputation as on force. The museum states it displays over 2,000 exhibits and describes a full collection of around 50,000 objects. Markus Hirte has directed it since June 2013.

Did you know? Despite the ghoulish reputation, the museum frames itself as a Rechtskundemuseum, a museum of legal history. Its stated aim is explaining how justice was administered and how law developed, not sensationalising torture for visitors.
