About Wallenstein Garden
An early Baroque garden below Prague Castle, with a grand frescoed loggia, a dripstone grotto wall, roaming peacocks, and bronze statues that are copies of looted originals.
The Wallenstein Garden is an early Baroque garden in Malá Strana, laid out between 1623 and 1629 for Albrecht von Wallenstein, supreme commander of the imperial armies in the Thirty Years' War. Its centrepiece is the sala terrena, a monumental triple-arched loggia whose ceiling carries frescoes of the Trojan War by the Italian painter Baccio del Bianco. Formal hedges, a pond with an island, an aviary and free-roaming peacocks complete the scene.
Bronze statues of classical gods and horses line the central avenue, but these are copies. The originals, by the Dutch Mannerist sculptor Adriaen de Vries, were looted by Swedish troops in 1648 and now stand at Drottningholm Palace in Sweden. A long wall of artificial dripstone forms a bizarre grotto along one side. The adjoining Wallenstein Palace is today the seat of the Czech Senate, and the garden is open to the public free of charge.
