About Kampa Island
A quiet island in the Vltava beside Malá Strana, ringed by the Čertovka mill channel, home to Museum Kampa, David Černý's crawling babies and a leafy riverside park.
Kampa is a small island in the Vltava in Malá Strana, separated from the mainland by the Čertovka, a narrow artificial channel once lined with working water mills. The riverside houses built to the water's edge have earned the district the nickname “Prague's Venice”. Often described as one of the city's largest islands, a claim contested by the larger Císařský ostrov upstream, Kampa is better known for its quiet square, cobbled lanes and riverside park.
At the island's heart, Museum Kampa opened in 2003 in the restored Sova's Mills, displaying the Jan and Meda Mládek collection of Central European modern art, including works by František Kupka. On the lawn outside crawl David Černý's giant faceless bronze babies, while Kampa Park at the southern end offers views across the Vltava to Charles Bridge and the National Theatre.
Did you know? Kampa is often called the largest island in Prague's stretch of the Vltava, but the title is disputed: Císařský ostrov, or Emperor's Island, upstream is actually larger. Kampa wins on charm, not size.
