About Lesser Town Square
The historic main square of Malá Strana at the foot of Prague Castle, split by the great Baroque Church of St Nicholas and marked by a Holy Trinity plague column.
Lesser Town Square is the main square of Malá Strana, spread at the foot of Prague Castle. It has been the district's centre since Malá Strana was founded as a town in 1257 under Přemysl Otakar II, making it one of Prague's oldest squares. The Baroque Church of St Nicholas, built between about 1704 and 1755 by the Dientzenhofer family, divides the space into an upper and a lower part, its dome rising roughly 70 metres.
Arcaded Renaissance and Baroque townhouses and palaces ring the square, among them the Lichtenstein Palace and the former town hall. In the upper square stands the Holy Trinity Column, a plague column about 20 metres tall erected between 1713 and 1715 to mark the end of a devastating plague epidemic, its sculptural work associated with Ferdinand Brokoff and others.
Did you know? The High Baroque Church of St Nicholas physically splits Lesser Town Square into upper and lower halves. Built by the Dientzenhofer family in the early 1700s, its dome rises about 70 metres over Malá Strana.
