About Lennon Wall
A constantly repainted graffiti wall on Grand Priory Square in Malá Strana that became a symbol of free expression under communism, honouring John Lennon, who himself never once visited Prague.
The Lennon Wall is a continuously repainted graffiti wall on Velkopřevorské náměstí in Malá Strana, opposite the French Embassy and owned by the Sovereign Military Order of Malta. After John Lennon's murder in December 1980, an unknown artist painted his portrait and Beatles lyrics here, and through the 1980s the wall became a spontaneous canvas for peace messages and veiled protest against the communist regime.
The authorities repeatedly whitewashed it and mocked the youth movement as “Lennonism”, but fresh graffiti always returned, making the wall a lasting symbol of free expression and passive dissent. John Lennon himself never visited Prague. The imagery changes constantly and was formally curated and restored around 2019, so no single painting on the wall is ever permanent.
Did you know? Despite its name, John Lennon never visited Prague or the wall. The graffiti tribute appeared only after his murder in December 1980, making the site a posthumous memorial rather than anywhere he knew in life.
