About Church of St Nicholas (Malá Strana)
A High Baroque Jesuit church on Malá Strana's square, celebrated for its huge green dome, sweeping ceiling frescoes, and the organ Mozart played in 1787.
The Church of Saint Nicholas in Malá Strana is a High Baroque Jesuit church on Malostranské náměstí, widely regarded as a masterpiece of Prague Baroque. It should not be confused with the other Saint Nicholas church on Old Town Square. Kryštof Dientzenhofer built the undulating nave from 1703, his son Kilián Ignác added the chancel, great dome and bell tower, and Anselmo Lurago completed the church in 1755.
Inside, the dome rises about 70 metres and carries a fresco of the Holy Trinity by Franz Xaver Palko, while the nave ceiling holds Johann Lukas Kracker's Apotheosis of Saint Nicholas, one of the largest frescoes in Europe at around 1,500 square metres. Mozart played the church organ in 1787, and a memorial Mass for him was held here in 1791. The adjoining bell tower, separately owned by the city, later served as a secret-police observation post.
