About Old Royal Palace (Starý královský palác)
The layered seat of Bohemian kings at Prague Castle, home to the pillarless Vladislav Hall and the window of the 1618 defenestration that helped spark the Thirty Years' War.
The Old Royal Palace was the residence of Bohemian princes and kings from around the ninth to the sixteenth century, built in layers with Romanesque and Gothic halls buried beneath the later Jagiellonian level. Its centrepiece is the Vladislav Hall, raised by Benedikt Ried between 1493 and 1502, the largest secular late-Gothic hall of its time in Central Europe, its intertwined rib vaulting spanning some sixty metres without interior columns. Grand enough for indoor jousting, it now hosts state ceremonies and presidential inaugurations.
Adjoining the hall, the Bohemian Chancellery was the scene of the Second Defenestration of Prague on 23 May 1618, when Protestant nobles threw two Catholic regents and their secretary from a window. All three survived the fall of some fifteen metres. The incident helped ignite the Bohemian Revolt and the Thirty Years' War.
Did you know? The Vladislav Hall was so vast that knights held jousting tournaments indoors on horseback; a gently ramped Riders' Staircase was built wide and shallow so the horses could climb up into the hall.
