About St George's Basilica (Bazilika sv. Jiří)

The oldest surviving church at Prague Castle, founded around 920: an austere Romanesque interior hiding behind a cheerful Baroque red facade, and the resting place of Saint Ludmila.

St George's Basilica is the oldest surviving church building within Prague Castle, founded around 920 by Prince Vratislaus I. Though its cheerful brick-red front facing St George's Square is an Early Baroque addition of the late seventeenth century, the church behind it is austerely Romanesque, rebuilt after a fire in 1142 with the twin white towers, nicknamed Adam and Eve, that still define its shape.

The basilica holds the tomb of Saint Ludmila, grandmother of Saint Wenceslas, reburied here around 925. In 973 the first convent in Bohemia was founded beside it, home to Benedictine nuns for centuries. Later Baroque chapels dedicated to Saint John of Nepomuk and Saint Ludmila were added, and the former convent once displayed a collection of Bohemian art. Today the basilica serves largely as a concert and exhibition space rather than a place of regular worship.

Did you know? The basilica's cheerful brick-red facade is a Baroque disguise from the late seventeenth century; step inside and the true building is austere Romanesque stone, making it the oldest surviving church within Prague Castle.
