About Strahov Monastery
A hilltop Premonstratensian monastery founded in 1143, famous for two dazzling Baroque library halls, a vast book collection, a cabinet of curiosities, and a revived monastic brewery.
Strahov Monastery crowns the hill above Prague Castle, founded in 1143 as the first house of the white-robed Premonstratensian order in Bohemia. A Romanesque basilica stood here within a few years; the sweeping Baroque forms visible today came with later rebuilding. Behind its walls, canons have kept a religious community going for close to nine centuries.
The monastery is best known for two spectacular library halls. The older Theological Hall, finished in the 1670s, carries ceiling frescoes by the Strahov monk Siard Nosecký. The taller Philosophical Hall was built in the 1790s around walnut bookcases salvaged from a dissolved Moravian abbey, and its single vast ceiling fresco is the work of Franz Anton Maulbertsch. Together the halls hold roughly 200,000 volumes, among them thousands of manuscripts and early printed books. A connecting corridor displays a Baroque cabinet of curiosities, and the monastery still runs its own brewery. Strahov remains an active religious house as well as a museum.
Did you know? The Philosophical Hall's walnut bookcases were not made for Strahov. They were rescued from a dissolved abbey in Moravia and moved to Prague in 1792, and the hall was built to fit them.
