About Vltava River
The Czech Republic's longest river, winding roughly 430 kilometres from the Bohemian Forest, threading past Prague's islands and bridges, and immortalised in Bedřich Smetana's symphonic poem “The Moldau”.
The Vltava is the longest river in the Czech Republic, flowing about 430 kilometres from its source in the Šumava, or Bohemian Forest, to its confluence with the Elbe at Mělník. Formed by two headstreams, the Warm Vltava and the Cold Vltava, it passes Český Krumlov and České Budějovice before curving through the heart of Prague. Known in German as the Moldau, it drains a basin of roughly 28,000 square kilometres.
Through Prague the river is crossed by around eighteen bridges, regulated by low weirs and dotted with islands such as Kampa. Paddle-steamers and small boats ply its surface while swans gather along the Malá Strana embankment. The river also inspired Bedřich Smetana's symphonic poem “Vltava”, part of his 1874 cycle Má vlast, which traces its course from mountain sources to broad Bohemian plain.
Did you know? At Mělník the Vltava meets the Elbe, yet it is actually the longer river carrying more water. By hydrology it should be the main stream, but convention keeps the Elbe the senior partner.
