About The Loreta
A Baroque Marian pilgrimage site in Hradčany, built around a replica of Italy's Holy House, famous for its 27-bell carillon and a diamond monstrance called the Prague Sun.
The Loreta is a Baroque pilgrimage complex in Prague's Hradčany quarter, built around a replica of the Santa Casa, the Holy House of Loreto in Italy. The Bohemian noblewoman Kateřina Benigna of Lobkowicz financed the little brick shrine in 1626–1627; the ornate façade and bell tower were added in the early eighteenth century to designs linked to the Dientzenhofer architects.
The tower carries a carillon of 27 bells cast in Amsterdam, which chimes a Marian hymn on the hour. The carillon first rang in 1695 and still plays a Marian hymn every hour. The complex also holds cloisters and the Church of the Nativity of Our Lord, but its most famous treasure is the diamond monstrance known as the Prague Sun, set with 6,222 diamonds and made in Vienna around 1700. Together they made the Loreta a celebrated Marian pilgrimage site in Bohemia.
Did you know? The Prague Loreta is built around a copy of the Santa Casa in Italy. The famous legend of angels carrying the Virgin Mary's house from Nazareth belongs to the Italian original, not to Prague.
