About Wenceslas Square
Less a square than a 750-metre boulevard, Wenceslas Square climbs from the shops of Mustek to the National Museum, and remains Prague's stage for protest, celebration and history.
Despite its name, Wenceslas Square is not a conventional square but a broad boulevard roughly 750 metres long, sloping gently from the Mustek crossroads up to the National Museum. Laid out in the fourteenth century as the horse market of Charles IV's New Town, it was renamed for the patron saint of Bohemia in 1848. Josef Vaclav Myslbek's bronze equestrian statue of Saint Wenceslas, flanked by four more Czech patron saints, closes its upper end.
For over a century it has been the nation's political stage. Czechoslovak independence was celebrated here in 1918; in January 1969 the student Jan Palach set himself alight in protest at the Soviet-led occupation; and in November 1989 vast Velvet Revolution crowds gathered on its slope. Today the boulevard mixes department stores, hotels and trams with memorials, remaining Prague's commercial heart and its favourite place to make history.
Did you know? For five centuries this was the Konsky trh, or Horse Market, where animals were traded from the medieval period until 1848, when patriots renamed the space in honour of Saint Wenceslas, Bohemia's patron.
