About Dancing House
On the Vltava riverfront, the Dancing House twists two towers into a glass-and-stone waltz. Completed in 1996 by Vlado Milunic with Frank Gehry, it is nicknamed “Fred and Ginger”.
The Dancing House is a deconstructivist office building on the Vltava embankment, designed in 1992 and completed in 1996 for the insurer Nationale-Nederlanden. Its curving form pairs a flaring glass tower against a solid stone one, an idea conceived by the Czech architect Vlado Milunic, who then collaborated with the Canadian-American architect Frank Gehry. The result is widely regarded as one of Prague's boldest modern landmarks.
The pairing earned the nickname “Fred and Ginger”, after the dancers Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, though Gehry grew wary of the Hollywood tag and preferred plain “Dancing House”. The riverfront plot had lain empty since a wartime air raid in 1945; the neighbouring resident Vaclav Havel championed its development. Chiefly offices, the building also holds a hotel and a rooftop bar beneath its twisted metal finial, nicknamed “Medusa”.
