About National Museum
Crowning Wenceslas Square with its dome and grand staircase, the National Museum's Neo-Renaissance palace was finished in 1891, shelled in 1968, and reopened after a sweeping restoration in 2018.
The National Museum's monumental main building crowns the head of Wenceslas Square. Designed by the architect Josef Schulz in an assertive Neo-Renaissance style and completed in 1891, it centres on a domed hall, a ceremonial staircase and the marble Pantheon honouring notable Czech figures. The institution itself is older, founded in 1818, and only later acquired this grand palace as its home.
During the Warsaw Pact invasion of August 1968, Soviet-led troops fired on the facade, and repairs left visibly paler patches across the sandstone. A widely repeated anecdote claims the soldiers mistook the building for parliament, though this is not firmly documented. A long reconstruction culminated in a ceremonial reopening in October 2018, timed to the centenary of Czechoslovakia, during which conservators deliberately preserved several bullet scars as historical witnesses. A modern former assembly building alongside is now linked into the museum complex.
Did you know? The building was designed by Josef Schulz and completed in 1891, yet the National Museum as an institution dates back to 1818, spending much of its early life without a permanent home.
