About National Theatre

Paid for coin by coin through a nationwide public collection, the golden-roofed National Theatre opened in 1881, burned within weeks, and was rebuilt by public donation to reopen in 1883.

The National Theatre stands on the Vltava embankment as a monument to the nineteenth-century Czech National Revival. Designed by the architect Josef Zitek in a Neo-Renaissance style and crowned by a gilded roof and bronze chariot groups, it was financed largely through a nationwide public collection, expressed in the motto “Narod sobe”, the nation to itself, inscribed above its stage.

The theatre opened in June 1881 with the premiere of Bedrich Smetana's opera Libuse, but a fire that August destroyed the dome, auditorium and stage. A fresh wave of donations funded its reconstruction under Zitek's pupil Josef Schulz, and it reopened in 1883. Its interiors were decorated by the celebrated Generation of the National Theatre, including Mikolas Ales, Josef Vaclav Myslbek and Vojtech Hynais, painter of the great stage curtain. Today Narodni divadlo is a multi-stage institution, but this historic golden-roofed building on the embankment remains its symbolic heart.

Did you know? The National Theatre was funded largely by ordinary Czechs through a public collection, embodying the motto “Narod sobe”, the nation to itself, a symbol of cultural pride under Austro-Hungarian rule.
