A row of tiny, brightly painted cottages set into Prague Castle's northern wall, once home to guards and goldsmiths, never the gold-making alchemists of legend, and briefly to Franz Kafka.
Golden Lane is a row of tiny, brightly painted cottages tucked into the arcades of Prague Castle's northern fortification wall, formed around the sixteenth century after new defences were built under Vladislaus II. Its first residents were castle guards and marksmen, followed by goldsmiths and craftspeople, the likely source of the name Zlatá ulička, and later the poor. The enduring legend that alchemists brewed gold here for Rudolf II is a myth; no gold-makers ever lived in the lane.
The street's most famous tenant was Franz Kafka, who used house No. 22, rented by his sister Ottla, as a daytime writing studio in 1916 and 1917. The Nobel laureate poet Jaroslav Seifert was among writers who met at No. 12. Today the cottages hold period interiors, craft shops and, upstairs, a gallery of arms and armour.
