About Prague Castle (Pražský hrad)

Prague Castle rises on a ridge above the Vltava as a walled quarter rather than a single fortress. Guinness World Records recognises it as the largest coherent castle complex in the world, covering almost seventy thousand square metres and stretching some five hundred and seventy metres from end to end. Within its walls stand St Vitus Cathedral, St George's Basilica, the Old Royal Palace, Golden Lane, gardens, courtyards and defensive towers.
Founded around 880 by the Přemyslid prince Bořivoj, the castle served as the seat of Bohemian dukes and kings and of two Holy Roman Emperors, Charles IV and Rudolf II. Since 1918 it has been the official residence of the Czech head of state. The Castle Guard keeps watch at the gates in uniforms designed in 1990 by Theodor Pištěk, and the ceremonial changing of the guard takes place at noon. Around four million visitors arrive each year.
