About St Vitus Cathedral (Katedrála sv. Víta)
The soaring Gothic cathedral crowning Prague Castle, begun by Charles IV in 1344 and completed only in 1929, holding the Bohemian Crown Jewels, royal tombs and Mucha's glowing window.
St Vitus Cathedral is the largest and most important church in Czechia and the seat of the Archbishop of Prague, dedicated to Saints Vitus, Wenceslaus and Adalbert. Charles IV laid its foundation stone in 1344, employing Matthias of Arras and then Peter Parler, but war and fire left it unfinished for centuries. The nave and western towers were completed only between 1873 and 1929, timed to the millennium of Saint Wenceslas.
The St Wenceslas Chapel, whose walls hold more than thirteen hundred semi-precious stones, guards the door to the Bohemian Crown Jewels, secured by seven locks. Alfons Mucha designed a painted-glass window in 1931, and the Baroque silver tomb of Saint John of Nepomuk, by Fischer von Erlach, contains around two tonnes of silver. The royal crypt below holds Charles IV, Rudolf II and other Bohemian rulers.
