About Rudolfinum
A neo-Renaissance concert hall and gallery of the 1880s on the Vltava embankment, home of the Czech Philharmonic, whose Dvořák Hall ranks among the oldest concert rooms in Europe.
The Rudolfinum is a neo-Renaissance concert hall and gallery on the Vltava embankment at Jan Palach Square, designed by Josef Zítek and Josef Schulz and built between 1876 and 1881. It opened in 1885 and was named after Crown Prince Rudolf of Austria, who presided at the ceremony. Its main auditorium, Dvořák Hall, is one of the oldest concert halls in Europe and admired for its acoustics.
The Czech Philharmonic gave its first concert here on 4 January 1896 under Antonín Dvořák, and the orchestra has been resident since 1946. Between 1919 and 1939 the building served a different purpose, housing the Chamber of Deputies of the Czechoslovak parliament, before returning to music after the Second World War. It also contains Galerie Rudolfinum, a contemporary-art gallery, while statues of composers and artists line the roof balustrade.
