About Sanssouci Park
The large royal landscape park linking Sanssouci's palaces, threaded by a 2.5-kilometre avenue with the Great Fountain and obelisk, and part of the UNESCO Palaces and Parks World Heritage Site.
Sanssouci Park is the large royal park in Potsdam, laid out from the mid-18th century under Frederick the Great and expanded by later kings. A straight main avenue about 2.5 kilometres long forms its spine, running from an obelisk of 1748 in the east, decorated with figures of Flora and Pomona, to the New Palace in the west. The park connects the principal buildings of the ensemble, among them Sanssouci Palace, the New Palace and the Orangery Palace.
Below the vineyard terraces lies the Great Fountain, engineered to reach about 38 metres but working as intended only after a steam engine began operating in October 1842. The original design combined the beautiful and the useful, mixing flower gardens with fruit and vegetable plots and some 3,000 fruit trees; later landscape reworking added meadows, trees and a pond. The park is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site inscribed in 1990.
Did you know? The Great Fountain was designed to rise about 38 metres, but the jet only reached that height after a steam engine started working in October 1842, long after the garden's first planting.
