About Orangery Palace (Orangerieschloss)
A 19th-century Italian-Renaissance-style palace on the Klausberg, built 1851 to 1864 for Frederick William IV, with a roughly 300-metre front and halls that still overwinter potted plants each winter.
The Orangery Palace (Orangerieschloss) stands on the Klausberg in the northern part of Sanssouci Park, Potsdam. Built between 1851 and 1864 for King Frederick William IV, nicknamed the 'Romantic on the Throne', it follows the Italian Renaissance Revival style, modelled on the Villa Medici in Rome and the Uffizi in Florence. Its front is about 300 metres long, and it was designed by Friedrich August Stüler, Friedrich Ludwig Persius and Ludwig Ferdinand Hesse. Two towers flank the central block.
Each of the two plant halls is about 103 metres long and 16 metres wide, with nearly full-height south-facing windows for overwintering plants. The central Raffael Hall is based on the Sala Regia in the Vatican and holds more than fifty copies of Renaissance paintings. The building was intended as part of a larger Italianate scheme along the Klausberg that was only partly realised. It has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1990.
Did you know? The Orangery Palace copies Italian models: its style is Italian Renaissance Revival, modelled on the Villa Medici in Rome and the Uffizi in Florence, with a front running about 300 metres long.
