About Sanssouci Palace

Frederick the Great's single-storey rococo summer palace, built 1745 to 1747 above terraced vineyard slopes in Potsdam, and part of the UNESCO Palaces and Parks World Heritage Site.

Sanssouci is the rococo summer palace of Frederick the Great, built between 1745 and 1747 in Potsdam. Georg Wenzeslaus von Knobelsdorff executed the design from the king's own sketches before his dismissal in 1746, after which Jan Bouman completed the work. The single-storey villa holds about ten principal rooms and stands as a leading example of the style known as Frederician Rococo, conceived as a private retreat rather than a seat of state power.

The palace crowns a series of terraced vineyard slopes on its south, garden-facing side. Its French name, read as 'Sans, Souci' or 'without cares', is traditionally taken as Frederick's personal motto, an interpretation of intent rather than a documented statement. Frederick had wished to be buried here; his remains were interred on the terrace only in 1991, following German reunification. Sanssouci forms part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site inscribed in 1990.

Did you know? The name 'Sans, Souci' translates as 'without cares'. It is widely read as Frederick the Great's personal motto for his retreat, though that meaning is an interpretation rather than a documented statement of purpose.
