About New Palace (Neues Palais)
The huge baroque Neues Palais at the park's western end, built 1763 to 1769 for Frederick the Great with over 200 rooms and more than 400 sandstone figures.
The New Palace (Neues Palais) stands at the western end of Sanssouci Park in Potsdam. Built between 1763 and 1769 for Frederick the Great, immediately after the Seven Years' War, it is often described as the last great Prussian Baroque palace. The building contains over 200 rooms, its east and west facades run about 220 metres long, and more than 400 sandstone statues and figures decorate the palace and its auxiliary buildings.
The interiors include the Grotto Hall, faced with shells, stones, marble, quartz and semi-precious stones, and the Marble Hall, the largest festival hall, which served as ballroom and banqueting room; the palace theatre opened on 18 July 1768. Behind the palace stand the Communs, service buildings linked by a colonnade that housed kitchens and quarters. The palace is widely read as a show of Prussian strength, an interpretation, and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1990.
Did you know? The New Palace was built right after the Seven Years' War and is commonly read as a 'fanfaronade', a show of Prussian wealth proving the state was not exhausted. Treat that symbolism as interpretation.
