St. Nicholas Church (Nikolaikirche) stands on the Alter Markt in central Potsdam, a central-plan building in the Classicist, or neoclassical, style. It was built to plans by Karl Friedrich Schinkel, with the main body constructed between 1830 and 1837. The floor plan is a Greek cross, with one arm extended by a semicircular apse. It is regarded as one of the major works of German classicist architecture.
The domed tambour was added later, between 1843 and 1850, under Ludwig Persius and then Friedrich August Stüler, giving the church a height of about 77 metres; that later dome departs from Schinkel's original design. Schinkel had planned a wooden dome, but the executed dome was built of cast iron. Near the end of World War II the church was damaged by a British air raid and Soviet artillery, and after lengthy rebuilding it was reconsecrated in 1981.
