About Cecilienhof Palace

An English Tudor-style palace in the New Garden, and the venue of the 1945 Potsdam Conference. It has been closed for renovation since November 2024; the surrounding park stays open.

Cecilienhof stands in the New Garden in the north of Potsdam, built in the style of an English Tudor country manor. Sources date its construction to about 1913 to 1917, with completion generally given as August 1917, making it the last palace built by the House of Hohenzollern. It was commissioned for Crown Prince Wilhelm and Duchess Cecilie of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, from whom it takes its name, and designed by Paul Schultze-Naumburg. Low and sprawling around several courtyards, it holds 176 rooms and 55 decorative chimney stacks.

From 17 July to 2 August 1945 the palace hosted the Potsdam Conference, where the delegations of Truman, Stalin and Churchill, later Attlee, produced the Potsdam Agreement. Part of the UNESCO World Heritage listing since 1990, Cecilienhof has served as a museum and a hotel. It has been closed for renovation since 1 November 2024, while the surrounding park remains open.

Did you know? Its low, sprawling shape hides its size well. Behind the half-timbered walls sit 176 rooms, and the roofline carries 55 different decorative chimney stacks, arranged around courtyards including the three-sided Ehrenhof.
